How to Create a Blog that Doesn’t Suck

Blog Help, Featured

Have you ever read a blog post that bored you to death? Or maybe you’ve read a blog that was so “all over the place” you couldn’t figure out what the blog was even about. That sucks!  In this day and age, people are too busy to have their time wasted. So, how do you create a blog that rocks?

The most important thing you should remember when it comes to blogging is that you should never lose sight of your readers. Never lose focus that your blog is about those who are reading it.  You need to write for them.  Strive to create content that in some way enhances their lives.  Write posts that share your knowledge.  Write posts that keep your readers informed about all the new and upcoming happenings in your niche.  Write to inspire, empower, and entertain your readers.  Share a little of yourself with your readers and let them get to know you.  You’ve got to be yourself and let your personality come through in your writing in order for your blog to stand out and shine among the others bloggers.

Write consistently and as frequently as your schedule will allow. Consistency is key when it comes to blogging.  Try to find a posting frequency that works best for you and stick to it. For some people that’s every day, for others it’s once or twice a week. Though many bloggers feel that blogging daily is crucial to success, I believe that you can still succeed by blogging less often, if needed. I generally advise that you blog at least once a week (though more often is usually better since it grows your content quicker giving your readers more to read).  If you don’t write regularly, the people who read your blog will find another blog to read.

People like consistency and dependability.  If you write every day for months and then start blogging once every two weeks people will wonder what happened to  you.  Now, some things can’t be helped and your frequency may need to change because of something personal going on in your life. Communicate that to your readers. You don’t have to give them all your nitty gritty personal details, but let them know when you have to take a break or when you’re going to be away for awhile.  They’ll appreciate you considering them and sharing your life with them too.

Write content that kicks butt and engages your readers. If you’ve chosen a blog topic that you know a lot about and have a passion for (which is ideal) then this will usually come naturally for you.  You will have a wealth of knowledge to share and you’ll usually have an interesting take on certain topics that others don’t.  When you’re first getting your blog established, try to churn out some meaty articles. Yaro Starak calls these your “pillar articles.”

Pillar articles will establish your blog with the content it needs to provide your readers a good blog experience and develop your blog for the search engines as well.  Some good formulas for pillar content are:

  • “How to” Articles – Teach your readers how to do something (kinda like the post you’re reading right now) :)
  • A  List – Find a topic in your niche (things, websites, topics, or people) that you can put in a list.  Blog readers tend to enjoy lists.
  • A Definition Piece – Take the time to define and explain something in your niche that your readers should know about and will enjoy.

When I first started blogging, I had no idea what I was doing. I was all over the place and didn’t have much of a focus on my first blog. But over time I developed my voice and educated myself about blogging.  Do you need some one-on-one coaching to enhance your blogging efforts? Though I’m not taking on any new consulting clients at the moment (please check my consulting services page once a month, if you’re interested), I can highly recommend the Blog Mastermind Coaching Program as a wonderful alternative.
