How To Blog

blog goals Do Your Blog Objectives Include Your Readers? One of the fabulous things about blogging is that blogs have the ability to be just about anything you want them to be. They provide a creative outlet for many people (including myself), while others view blogs as a way to raise awareness and communicate with like-minded people. Using Wordpress as your blogging platform offers you the ability to make your blog do a variety of things with the many plugins now available. Once you have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish with your blog, you should take some time to consider your readers. What kind of value will your blog objectives provide to them? Hey, wasn’t it JFK who said, “Ask not what your blog can do for you, but what your blog can do for your readers?” OK, so maybe that’s not exactly what he said! ;-)

Here are some key blogging points to keep in mind:

1. Share your knowledge with your readers. Educate and empower your readers whenever possible.  If you choose a blog topic that you have some experience in (a good idea) then producing content of this kind may seem obvious.  However, there are some topics where bloggers hold back on the really good stuff because sharing too much information may compromise something important to them (a good example of this is affiliate marketers not sharing their niches to avoid competition and loss of revenue).  Sharing your knowledge will provide value to your readers.  This is important! Your readers are more likely to enjoy your blog and come back again if you educate them about something they are already interested in.

2. Keep your readers informed about your blog topic. Update your readers on new things going on within your blogs area of interest and provide them with useful resources.  If you blog about your favorite TV show, then it would be a great idea to stay informed about current events surrounding your show and the actors.  You can collect this information by frequenting the official TV show website, setting a Google alert for the name of the show and the actors, and subscribing to other blogs about the show.  If you take the time to stay “in the know” then you can collect all the goodies and put them in one place for others to find  – your blog!  Sharing valuable resources on your blog topic is also a great idea. Linking your readers to other websites that compliment your blog (such as forums, membership sites, etc.) will make your readers love you all the more.

3. Let your personality shine through. The one thing that makes your blog unique in every way is YOU! There is only one you, so be yourself and show your personality when you write.  If you know and love your blog topic then usually this comes a little easier for most people.  In between your fabulous content you should try to have fun, entertain your readers, and let them get to know you.  In the end, it’s you they will be coming back for.
